Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council serves the communities in 245 square miles of north Hampshire. This area includes Steventon, just outside Basingstoke, where Jane Austen was born and lived for more than half her life. The well-loved author drafted some of her most famous works while living there, including Pride and Prejudice.
To mark the 200th anniversary of Jane’s death, the borough will celebrate the life of its ‘local girl’ throughout 2017. A range of events and initiatives will showcase her legacy and how her work still entertains and inspires people today. For more information see www.basingstoke.gov.uk/jane-austen
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Deputy Leader Cllr Terri Reid said: “The council is pleased to be supporting the Sitting with Jane project, which is just one of the exciting things in the pipeline to celebrate Jane Austen’s life next year. Along with recognising the importance of Basingstoke in the Jane Austen story it will undoubtedly bring visitors to the town which will boost tourism and the local economy for the area.”
