Decision Time for Sponsors!

Destination Basingstoke is unveiling their artists’ designs for the ‘Sitting With Jane’ project in an exclusive private viewing for sponsors at Oakley Hall on Thursday 26th January.

The ‘Wild in Art’ event, delivered by Destination Basingstoke and in association with Festival Place, is a public art trail that will be staged in the summer of 2017.

The artists’ designs will be painted onto a template ‘BookBench’, that acts as a 3D canvas – making the finished piece, not only a work of art, but an attractive piece of street furniture that will be accessible for all to see and sit on, to contemplate the artist, Jane Austen or the scene and landscape where it is located. It will form part of a worldwide celebration of Jane Austen’s life, and the ‘Jane Austen 200 – A life in Hampshire’ event spearheaded by Hampshire Cultural Trust, and is one of many exciting and creative projects in Basingstoke and the surrounding area planned for 2017.

A whole range of designs have been submitted from local artists as well as some internationally known artists from around the UK, and this will be the first opportunity for their sponsors to see the designs and make their selection.

“We are really excited to get our first glimpse of the designs for our BookBenches – I am sure it’s going to be a difficult decision – do we go for a traditional design or perhaps something more edgy? It sounds like there has been a fantastic response from artists both local and far afield,” said Steven Connolly, Director of Festival Place and headline sponsor for the project.

The selected artists will then be commissioned to paint their BookBench ready for the summer art trail.
