The idea for Sitting With Jane was been developed by Destination Basingstoke as a creative way to encourage visitors to explore in and around Basingstoke to enjoy everything the area has to offer from the superb countryside, great leisure and cultural offer as well as appreciate the wealth of local history and heritagePrint and especially the area’s strong connection with Jane Austen. The project forms part of the ‘Jane Austen 200 – A Life in Hampshire’ project led by the Hampshire Cultural Trust.

Art trails of this type are a proven means to developing local tourism, supporting local business and engaging with all parts of the community– it has proved an effective way to put Basingstoke on the map as a creative, interesting place – and will support Destination Basingstoke’s key message as vibrant place where good things happen.

Our partners, Wild in Art, have experience from around the world on the impact such events have on a community, local tourism and profile, including:

  • 50% increase in footfall
  • Increases in repeat visits – some will visit 3 times
  • Increase in hotel occupancy and dwell time
  • 60% increase in visitor spend
  • Enhanced profile and placemaking
  • Viral social media
  • Raise £50,000+ for a local charity

The trail is now ending after thousands of visitors have enjoyed it, many thanks to everyone that has been involved along the way.
